Information System
The history of the Information System dates back to 1999, when Masaryk University started the development of this unique web-based application. It comprises tools utilized for managing school-related data, e-learning applications, and modules facilitating communication within the university. It is currently used by more than 30 000 users a day and it is still being developed and extended.
All university students, teachers or employees have their own personal account in the information system (ISMU, or just IS), including e-mail, web space and access to numerous applications and data. Upon enrollment, new students obtain their university number (UČO) and an automatically generated primary password (change is recommended). On the basis of this, they can set up secondary passwords (for using public computers and the
Wi-Fi net at the university) and start using the system facilities.
You can enter your account ("Personal Administration") through authorization at
http://is.muni.cz, after choosing
"Log in". The content of your IS pages differs according to your position at the university (i.e. whether you are a teacher, an employee, a student or a graduate). For students, the IS is a vital tool for administering their studies, communicating with teachers and using study materials. Here are some examples of the most important IS applications used in different phases of your studies:
Before the start of semester, you can
- browse information about courses you are interested in;
- register for courses: by registering for courses, students express their intention to enroll in these courses - usually before the period of enrollment (see Academic Calendar of FSS);
- enroll or cancel one's enrollment in courses during the period of enrollment changes (again, see Academic Calendar of FSS);
- enroll in seminar groups (if there are any in the course);
- apply for an enrollment exception (for students who do not meet the course enrollment prerequisites);
During the semester, you can
- print your timetable and search other timetables.
- view detailed syllabuses of your courses and other related information (study materials, e-learning etc.);
- select a paper topic or a topic of a thesis, a project, etc.;
- submit your paper, thesis or project;
- share electronic materials with other students or teachers;
- receive information or comments from your teachers;
- evaluate courses that you are enrolled in;
- make comments about courses and share opinions with your peers.
Anytime, you can
- perform full-text IS database searches (documents, people, courses, etc.); -
search for contact information related to departments as well as people working and studying at the university; -
access some applications over the phone; - display a wide range of statistical information; -
upload large files into the File Depository and store them there; -
post and read messages on the Notice Board; - participate in university or faculty e-elections; -
play the game "Rock Biter".
You can choose from many IS applications depending on your needs, from any computer connected to the Internet. Using an IS application usually consist of filling in a data form (e.g. choosing courses, entering names of people you would like to find, etc.) and of confirming your choice
("Save", "Send", "Find", etc.). This will send your request to the central computer. You should also check your IS mailbox regularly – this is the most important means of communication between you and your teachers or administrative staff!
In case of any technical problems with the IS or your Personal Administration, please contact your local IS administrator: Ing. Libor Caha
(caha@fss.muni.cz, phone 549 493 255, or meet him personally in CIKT FSS MU – room 2.27).
